AWS launches Well-Architected Agent public preview

If your business runs infrastructure on AWS, this new AI agent can automatically review your cloud setup and flag concrete cost, security and reliability improvements, including the dollar impact of specific changes. It's a preview tool for your IT or cloud team to try, not something a non-technical staff member would use directly, and it currently needs an AWS Support plan and a US region.

What changed

AWS announced a public preview of the Well-Architected Agent, an AI-powered service that analyses a customer's AWS environment against Well-Architected best practices across 65+ services and recommends cost, security, performance and resilience improvements, with remediation via console walkthroughs, updated infrastructure-as-code templates or CLI commands. It is available in US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio) and US West (Oregon), is delivered through AWS Support, and requires an AWS Support plan.

When this could help

Useful when planning a cloud cost or architecture review and wanting AI-generated, prioritised findings before committing engineering time to a full manual audit.

AWS Well-Architected Agent automatically analyses an AWS environment against Well-Architected best practices across 65+ services and produces goal-aligned cost, security, performance and resilience recommendations, instead of a team running a manual Well-Architected review.

How to get started

  1. Create an agent profile and declare which business goals matter (cost optimization, performance, resilience, security).

  2. Complete the required IAM role setup so the agent can read the environment.

  3. Run an architecture review; recommendations are generated within 24 hours of profile creation.

  4. Remediate findings via console walkthroughs, updated Infrastructure-as-Code templates (Terraform, CloudFormation or CDK for architecture-level recommendations), or AWS CLI commands; recommendations can also be pulled into existing workflows via the API or the AWS MCP Server.

Build it into your routine

  1. Periodic architecture health check

Re-run the Well-Architected Agent review on a regular cadence (e.g. quarterly) to catch new cost, security or resilience issues as the environment changes, since the announcement states recommendations update periodically rather than in real time.

What to check

  • AWS states the generative AI output 'may contain errors or incomplete information' and that customers are responsible for evaluating recommendations and applying their own oversight and safeguards before acting on them. Source ↗
  • Recommendations are updated periodically, not in real time. This is a public preview, limited to three US regions for the agent itself (though it can onboard workloads from any commercial AWS Region), and requires an AWS Support plan. Source ↗
