What changed

OpenAI added Codex Cloud, letting developers start and continue coding tasks from desktop, web or mobile using reusable cloud environments preloaded with a project's repositories, tools and dependencies.

Why it matters to your work

Aimed at developers using Codex who switch between devices mid-project — reusable cloud environments mean you pick up where you left off on desktop, web, or mobile without re-setting up each time.

When this could help

Useful for any coding task that takes longer than a single sitting, needs to be checked on from a phone, or benefits from a clean, reproducible environment instead of a local setup.

Reusable cloud environments pre-load a project's repositories, tools, and dependencies so a task can start immediately in its own isolated workspace, continue running while a computer is asleep, and be picked up again from desktop, web, or mobile.

How to get started

  1. On the web or in the desktop app, start a new task, choose Work in > Cloud, open Select environment, then Create environment — Codex inspects your repositories and helps prepare and test the setup before you publish it.

  2. For a managed workspace: an admin installs and configures the GitHub (or other source-system) connector, limiting repository access to what each audience needs, then grants the Use Codex in the cloud permission to intended members.

  3. Grant Manage workspace environments to whoever creates/edits shared environments, then configure the environment's repositories, secrets, and internet access.

  4. After publishing an environment, start and continue cloud tasks from the web, mobile (open Codex and select the published environment), or the desktop app; anyone with repository access can push the pull requests a task generates.

Build it into your routine

  1. Start a task at the desk, finish it on the phone

Kick off a bug-fix or test-writing task from the desktop app before a meeting, then check progress and review the generated pull request from the Codex mobile app afterward.

  2. Long-running refactor overnight

Start a multi-step codebase investigation or refactor task in the cloud and let it keep running unattended while the laptop is closed, then pick up the result the next morning.

What to check

  • Only works with cloud-hosted GitHub repositories; on-premises or non-GitHub codebases need the Codex SDK to build an equivalent workflow instead. Source ↗
  • Requires a ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, Edu, or Enterprise plan to use Codex everywhere; Enterprise workspaces have Codex Cloud off by default until an admin enables it. Source ↗
